Research Facilities
The School of Pharmacy is the sole occupant of Faser Hall, a four-story building completed in 1969, housing the teaching and research activities of the faculty and students. The fourth floor of Faser Hall was fully renovated in 2005. Renovation of the third floor of Faser Hall began in 2008 and was completed in 2010.
All members of the biomolecular sciences faculty hold joint appointments with the Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences. In 1989, the institute received approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a National Center for Natural Products Research.
The National Center for Natural Products Research is housed in the Thad Cochran Research Center, a modern, well-equipped research building (115,000 sq. ft. of laboratory and office space). Construction of a second research building (110,000 sq. ft.) was completed in 2015. The laboratories equipment, services, and other resources that provide critical infrastructure to support the research activities of the NCNPR include:
- A repository containing over 18,000 natural product specimens, derived extracts, and pure compounds
- A screening database including more than 30,000 samples
- Isolation and Purification Laboratories
- Screening Laboratories for determining biological activity of natural products
- Central Instrumentation Laboratories housing 600, 500, and (2) 400 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometers
- Medicinal chemistry synthesis laboratories
- Molecular Modeling Laboratory with Silicon Graphics workstations
- Natural Products Analytical Laboratory with LC, GC, MS and CE instrumentation
- State-of-the art equipment for genomics research including Affymetrix Complete GeneChip Instrument System, Perkin Elmer confocal laser scanner and Applied Biosystems GeneAmp Sequence Detection System
- Integrated Science Library housing over 69,000 volumes
- Central Animal Facility
- Maynard W. Quimby Medicinal Plant Garden with production greenhouses, demonstration garden beds, shade houses and field plots
