Medicinal Chemistry
Medicinal Chemistry is an interdisciplinary field, involving chemistry and important aspects of biological and pharmaceutical sciences. Medicinal Chemistry focuses on the discovery, design, and invention of biologically active compounds, the study of their metabolism, the interpretation of their modes of action at the molecular level, and the understanding of structure-activity relationships.
Our outstanding division offers research opportunities and graduate education on the discovery and development of new drugs as well as the exploitation of new biological targets for the treatment of cancer, malaria, CNS disorders, and infectious diseases. We blend conventional disciplines to conduct research in asymmetric organic synthesis, computational drug design, automated high-throughput synthesis and analysis, biological evaluation, and assay development.
Our mission is to continue producing highly trained graduates for careers in the Pharmaceutical Sciences and preparing them to be the next generation of leaders in academia and industry.

All applications must be made via the UM Graduate School’s on-line application procedure, which can be found at: https://gradschool.olemiss.edu/apply-now/
All application materials must be submitted only through the UM Graduate School’s on-line application system. Application materials should not be sent directly to the department. The following items must be included in the on-line application:
- Two letters of recommendation, at least one of which is from a faculty member in the applicant’s major study area. The letter writers will need to submit their letter themselves through the on-line system.
- A statement of purpose
- Undergraduate/graduate transcript(s). Please arrange for the official transcript(s) to be sent directly from your university to the graduate school. Only the graduate school can post the transcript(s) to the application system.
It is also possible to submit supporting documentation through the UM Graduate School’s on-line application system, such as:
- List of publications
- Research interest areas
- Prior work experiences relevant to biomolecular sciences
Please arrange for the IELTS/TOEFL score to be sent to the graduate school. The institutional code for the University of Mississippi is 1840. The department code for TOEFL is 99. GRE score is NOT required for admission.
